And like you, I was a burnt-out, tired momma just trying to find myself again.
Let me set the scene. It was 2017, and from the outside, it looked like I had it all together—a career, a loving husband, two beautiful daughters, spots on multiple boards, and even a book club. But inside, I was running on fumes.
I was so focused on looking like I had everything under control while silently questioning every decision I made. Even when I had downtime, I filled it with endless projects around the house, time with the kids, or catching up on chores.
Vacations? They weren’t much better. I was still the planner, the sunscreen applier, the nap-schedule enforcer, the "Does everyone have something to eat?" checker. I never got the chance to just relax.
One night, scrolling through social media before bed, I saw a package tour for Iceland—a bucket-list destination of mine. Something clicked. I needed this. Not just a trip. A break. For me.
I reached out to a mom friend who also needed a getaway, and after some back-and-forth, we booked a four-day trip to Iceland in January 2018.
Sure, it took a lot of planning. I stocked the kitchen, prepped outfits, created schedules (yes, Type A over here!). But by the time I left, I knew my family was covered, and I could finally let go.
For four glorious days, I wasn’t “Mom.” I was just Jill.
We explored the Golden Circle, hiked through lava tunnels, ate local foods, and napped on tour buses. There were no complaints about sore feet, no cries of “I’m bored,” no picky eaters turning up their noses. Just pure, unfiltered joy and presence.
At first, I felt guilty about leaving my husband and kids behind. But when I came home, I realized something: taking that break made me better.
The house wasn’t perfect when I got back. The schedule wasn’t followed. Dinner had been takeout every night. And guess what? I didn’t care. Everyone was alive, and life went on. But I came back feeling more like myself than I had in years.
My cup was full again, and I was ready to take on the chaos of life.
